Motorists on I-81 in Northern Virginia had to contend with lengthy delays on Thursday afternoon following a multi-vehicle crash.

All northbound lanes of the interstate were closed in the County of Frederick as of 2:15 p.m. on Oct. 17 near mile marker 318, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Traffic backups were estimated at approximately 2.5 miles, officials said. There was no definitive timeline for when the scene would be clear.

No details about the crash have been released.
